I’m not opening a debate about the validity of religion, doctrine or dogmatic lines of thought, but rather asking for discussion on the purpose of ‘Church’ (the group of people meeting together).
What do you think the purpose of Church is?
Fellowship? Education? Worship? An alternative to those who don’t like sports on TV? A place to show off our newest clothes, car or special friend? To ease the guilts of life? To give guilt about life? To socialize? To find a date or mate? Free coffee? To keep up the facade of a good person? To escape from something? To escape to something? To impress someone? To make God like you? To put in the hours in the pew or chair? To make business connections? Habit? Religious training? Penance for the rest of the week? Free child care? Surrogate parents? Reduce time in purgatory?
What are your thoughts?

Randomly found your blog today, and it's funny because your daughter that just graduated has my exact same first and middle name (spelling and everything). I've never met another. Anyway, I wanted to give my answer to your question. I think people go for all the reasons you stated and more. I like to believe that ultimately we all go looking for Hope, and perhaps at the core of all of the things you mentioned that is what is there - Hope.
